E and I recently went on a quick trip to Scotland, which was primarily for work, but we had some time to relax, eat (of course), and spend time with people we adore, so it was generally a very lovely weekend.
Although our main destination was a little north of Edinburgh, we spent our last night in the city in preparation for our morning train back to London. We really didn't have all that much time there, which is a pity as it is a truly stunning city, but we'd both been to Edinburgh a few times before so it didn't disappoint us too much!
As we were staying with our fantastic hosts who live in the centre of town (but out of the hustle and bustle, making it idyllic and quiet), we did have time to go for a short walk to work up an appetite for dinner (the Scots do know how to feed you well).
It was a typically dreary day weather-wise, but in a strange way, I quite liked that for the photos - Scotland has a unique beauty that seems to take that grey-sky-and-misty-rolling-hills thing very well. And this is the view that we enjoyed atop Calton Hill, a place that was new to both of us. It's pretty easy to climb up to the top, where you're greeted with a panoramic view of the city. Although there were handfuls of tourists here and there, it was surprisingly quiet and it felt very serene to be walking around, taking in the sights and spotting the famous buildings of the Edinburgh skyline.
I really do have a thing for rooftop views - it just makes you feel little, in a good way, you know? It reminds you that life is bigger, that your problems are smaller, and that there is always so much going on beyond your day-to-day routine. And I especially love views like these, where there is a juxtaposition of cityscape and nature, and such a variety in architecture. Just one of the many reasons why I am a city girl, through and through.
