eat first home :: a gourmet delivery service

06 May 2015

I've mentioned quite a few times in the past, that I'm not a very regular cook. It's not that I dislike cooking - I just don't like it enough to feel inspired and motivated to do it as often as I should. Of course, my husband being a keen cook kind of lets me off the hook a little bit... in fact, I blame it on him, as anything I cook pales in comparison! Any excuse.

So when Eat First Home got in touch to see if I was interested in trying out their gourmet dinner delivery service, I was all ears. A takeaway without all the junk? A choice of varied dishes? And all it takes is a bit of heating up? It sounded pretty ideal to me.

The number one thing that I love about the dishes that they offer, is that they inform of you of all the ingredients and there is absolutely zero funny business going on there. All their meals are simply fresh ingredients that are put together, just as you would at home. They also give you the nutritional value of each meal, which I think is very useful for the health conscious.

The whole process of ordering our dishes was very easy - their website is clear and user-friendly, and you get a few different dishes to choose from each day, and they switch up daily. The delivery was smooth and I was alerted by text when it was about to arrive, which was quite handy as I knew when to pre-heat the oven!

As E and I were both trying to be healthy that week (in preparation for a big weekend of food, obviously), we both chose the Basque Cod Stew, which was essentially a fillet of fish with stewed vegetables. They were incredibly simple to put together and heat up according to the instructions, and we were ready for dinner in no time.

Here's the verdict of the food: it was extremely fresh and definitely tasted like a home-cooked meal, but it was a little over-seasoned. E likes his salt but even for him, it was slightly too much, so this is the one area that it could improve on. We were both impressed with the quality of the fish, and it felt like a balanced and satisfying meal which was great for a weekday evening.

We also tried their brownie, and a gluten-free peanut butter cookie they threw in there for good measure, which were pretty good - again, what I really enjoyed about them was the "heathy" aspect. The whole point of the service is to give you a dinner delivery without the heavy feeling of a greasy takeaway (although there is always a time and place for them, in my opinion!), which translated into the desserts as well.

Price-wise, the main dishes range from £6.95 to £8.95, which is fairly reasonable for the lack of hassle and quality ingredients. Realistically, I wouldn't use the service too often as the costs add up, but it's a useful option in a pinch and you know that you're filling your body with a nutritious meal.

With the hectic lives we all tend to lead these days, you might want to give Eat First Home a go - check our their website and see if they deliver to your area. It's certainly a delivery service with a difference.

disclaimer: I was invited to try Eat First Home for a complimentary meal and to share an honest review. All opinions are my own, as always.
