Day out: Camden & Hampstead Heath

13 July 2013

With big changes looming close for both me and my best friend, we decided to make the most of the day and spend some quality time stomping around London town.

First stop was Camden, somewhere neither of us venture into very often, but all that buzz and colour today reminded me that I really should! We wandered around the market, sniffed the delicious food (and tucked into big fat burritos), eyed up the handmade jewellery and had a lovely time in the sun. Oh, and we had a cheeky stop for very special ice cream which I will share next time.

Next up, we went to soak up even more Vitamin D on Hampstead Heath. It was quite the hike as we got a bit lost, the heath really needs more signs and maps (because clearly it is not our inadequate senses of direction...)! In the end, we made it to the Ladies' Pond with the help of some very friendly girls, and we lay in the sun and chatted about life.

After a well-earned drink in a local pub garden (having fun is obviously hard work!), we ended the day with some korean food at Bibimbap in Soho.

I urge you, grab your best friend and spend the weekend frolicking in the sunshine while it's ours. It cures just about anything, I promise.

Hyde Park

08 July 2013

It's easy to grumble about London when the weather is (often) dreary and grey, but when the sun shines and we pull out our summer dresses, there is truly nowhere I would rather be.

I have been back in London for a week now, and miraculously the sun has shined pretty much all week long. The day after my return, E and I celebrated the end of the long-distance relationship and the beginning of our last stretch before getting hitched with a little picnic in Hyde Park.

The food was nothing fancy, just a couple of salads from M&S, and we drank white wine out of plastic cups. But it was the perfect way to kick off this next chapter of my life.

Crêpeaffaire

07 July 2013

Who doesn't love a good crêpe? I don't have a particularly sweet tooth, so although I do love a crêpe slathered with Nutella, I actually love savoury ones even more.

E and I were headed to our friends' house to watch the Wimbledon final (we were equal parts relieved and overjoyed that Murray rose to the occasion!), and although we were sadly not inside the actual grounds, we were actually in Wimbledon. As we had missed out on the brunch earlier, we stumbled across this little crêperie and popped in for a quick bite.

For some reason I was seriously craving tuna, so I went with my gut and chose the tuna, sweetcorn & cheese filling.

When the crêpes came, I thought they looked a little sad with no garnish or colour on the plate (although I'm not sure what I expected from a "fast food" type place), but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.

It wasn't mind-blowing or anything, but actually it was pretty good for a warm lunch under 5 pounds. It's definitely a nice change from your usual sandwich, and there's a lot of choice for fillings. Our friend later told us he often goes there to grab lunch on work days, since they have very fast service and do take-away, all being quite reasonably priced. Even though it's not the most exciting of places, it's definitely a good choice for when you're on the go.

I wish we had one of those crêpe-making metal slabs at home (like my technical vocab?). Sadly one of the many kitchen appliances that I will have to admire from afar...
