As I mentioned before, we were incredibly lucky with the weather, and the day that we took in the two best views of the trip (the second will be coming in another post soon!), by late morning there was not a cloud in the sky.
This only made our visit to Minnewater Park all the more beautiful. Minnewater is a canalised lake, nicknamed the Lovers' Lake (Minne in Dutch means love, I think?), and is wonderfully picturesque. I found that while the old town was bustling with people, this was a quieter spot where there were only a few of us at a time strolling over the bridge, and standing still to enjoy the scenery and calm. The paths in and out of the park were also pretty and it was one of my favourite moments of the whole trip.
We enjoyed a lovely lunch after our little wander (all the food will be coming in another post, I promise!), we visited one of the main landmarks of Bruges, the Church of Our Lady.
Although the church itself is renowned and is a beautiful one, the main attraction for most people is the Michelangelo sculpture that is displayed there. His Madonna and Child is one of Bruges' most precious treasures (it was looted twice and had to be recovered, first by the French revolutionaries and then by the German Nazis), and was something we could not miss.
To my surprise, photography was allowed so of course, I had to take a few snapshots of this revered sculpture, created around 1504. I think it's an amazing thing for a small city like Bruges to hold such a significant piece of art.
And then it was time to walk to the centre of town and climb up 366 steps...but more on that next time.
