the grill on the market

03 March 2015

Let me just warn you right now, you're about to get very, very hungry. And to marvel at how much I can eat, but that's not exactly breaking news.

You might remember my review of The Alchemist, a place that offers amazing cocktails and surprisingly good food. Considering how much I enjoyed The Alchemist, I was naturally quite excited to be invited to their sister restaurant, The Grill on the Market in Smithfield Market. It's not an area I'm very familiar with, but I ventured out there last weekend, more than ready for some steak action.

First though, E and I had a drink at the bar because a) we don't often do this, and b) because we had both set our minds on having the Smokey Old Fashioned that we loved so much at The Alchemist. It's just my kind of cocktail - not too sweet but sweet enough, incredibly smooth and seriously delicious.

And then we moved on to enjoy a veritable feast.

The menu is extensive, with the main dishes offering a wide selection of meat and seafood dishes. E started with the Deep Fried Brie, which is as decadent and amazing as it sounds! I chose the Foie Gras with Spiced Rhubarb & Gingerbread, which was dreamy. So far, we were very impressed.

And then came our picks for mains, which were matching - Rib-Eye Steaks (cooked rare) with peppercorn sauce & homemade chips. Oh my. This was no ordinary rib-eye - these were from the Best of British menu and the meat was of the finest quality. It was definitely one of the best steaks I'd ever had (not that I eat steak very often... in fact, this was probably equivalent to a monthly average intake of red meat for me!), it was cooked perfectly rare and we couldn't stop raving about it. The chips shouldn't go unmentioned either, as they were pretty great too. We enjoyed a lovely bottle of Côte du Rhone with our dinner, which was quite a treat.

Needless to say, we were quite full by this point... but we did find a corner somewhere in our stomachs to share a dessert, which was a classic Sticky Toffee Pudding. Again, we agreed that it was one of the best that we'd tried, which we don't say lightly!

As you can imagine, we basically had to roll ourselves home, but in the best possible way. We had a great evening at The Grill, the service was friendly and attentive, and the food wowed us. We would certainly not hesitate to go back (and would make sure we go very hungry).

disclaimer: I was kindly invited for a complimentary meal at The Grill on the Market, and to write an honest review. All opinions are my own, as always.
