the happy list :: december 2014

04 January 2015

All photos from my Instagram!

Read: The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa. I haven't quite finished it yet, but I stumbled across it in  bookshop recently and was somehow immediately intrigued. It's a beautifully written story about a housekeeper who cares for a professor with a 80 minute memory span, and although I read it in English, I can almost imagine the style of the Japanese language that the author wrote this in. In hindsight, I should have maybe read it in Japanese following my birthday resolutions!

Watched: The Missing, a mini series on BBC1 that I watched a little late on iPlayer. It's a haunting, gripping story about a boy who goes missing on holiday in France with his parents, and the investigation that ensues. If you liked Broadchurch, you would like this. I actually preferred this, although I am looking forward to the new season of Broadchurch too.

Ate: All the cheese and duck and rillettes and bread and other French goodies in Bordeaux, including the epic Christmas Eve dinner that E cooked for 9 of us. I feel like I spent the whole month eating to my heart's content, actually.

Clicked: I have slowly been catching up on my blog reading, and I have in particular been marvelling at Marla's recap of her recent trip to Oaxaca, Mexico on her blog, A Weekend Crossing. These photos blew me away, it looks like an amazing place to visit!

Purchased: The little Christmas presents we bought for our niece and nephew - aged 5 and 7, they are such fun ages to buy presents for, especially when the girl loves all things princessy and girly, and the boy loves puzzles and brain-tickling games!

Listened: Serial. They wrapped up their first season last month, and I am suffering from withdrawal symptoms. I don't want to give any spoilers for those who are yet to pull themselves out from under rocks, but I am really hoping that the second season comes soon, and that it's as good as the first.

Wore: Fellow petite ladies will sympathise with the whole can't-find-jeans-that-I-don't-have-to-roll-up-5-times conundrum. I've worn these Petite ASOS Ridley jeans to death not just this month but the last 10 months or so, and they fit perfectly, haven't stretched or faded and are very comfortable. And I don't have to roll them up!

Visited: Bordeaux. There's only one post up so far of my trip, but there are more to come - and I loved it there so much.

Blogged: My favourite post of last month is of the Winter Festival at the Southbank. It was so festive, delicious and just the right thing to kick off the Christmas month with!

Celebrated: Christmas, of course! I even made a little video for it.

Cooked: I really didn't cook anything particularly worth mentioning last month... it was a hectic few weeks and the times our kitchen was producing anything worthwhile, E was the one doing the hard work. However, I did whip up some baked courgette fries the other day which I will write about very soon! And I really do intend to cook more this year. Fingers crossed.

Thanks so much for reading!

  7. Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!! I listened to Serial too and was sooo hooked! I finished Season 1 in two days. And The Housekeeper and the Professor sounds so familiar. Was it turned into a movie? I think I saw the movie! The professor is like into math and numbers?

  8. Blushingggg thank you my dear :] I think spending December eating to your heart's content is what the month is all about haha. And you mentioned Serial before (your last Happy List I think?) and I started it within a week of reading what you said haha. I finished the whole thing in like five days I COULDN'T STOP! So so so good, I can't wait for next season! Super stoked to see all of your Bordeaux pictures, it was one of the prettiest cities I visited in France and your photos are always stunning so I'm sure you did an incredible job capturing it. And your video was beautiful, I loved it :]

  9. Yay, I can't wait to read your courgette fries recipe! Totally a naughty/nice food to make during the post-Christmas lull :) I'm missing Serial too, although I finally got my parents and sister hooked on it too - so every evening I hear the familiar strains of the title theme echoing through the house! So many theories coming at me now...x
