I didn't really know what it was about, but when we got there it was clear that this vast space was used for various recreational activities - cycling, rollerblading, dog-walking, BBQing, segway-ing... it was basically a huge, spacious playground.
We had taken some sushi with us (told you Berlin has good sushi!), so we spend a little while desperately looking for some shade to eat and for the fish not to fry, and eventually we found a patch of tree-covered grass to sit on.
It's definitely a bit of an odd place - not eerie exactly, but because it's so big and empty it looks and feels strange. It was good to see it though and made for a quiet picnic spot - I can imagine it being the ideal place to learn to ride a bike or practise your rollerblading (which I used to do a lot as a child and loved it!).
That evening, recommended by our friend who used to be a Berliner, we found ourselves in an all-American restaurant where we had the biggest, cheesiest, manliest burgers we'd ever laid our eyes on.
Oh wait, we also stopped by a bar near where we were staying for a happy hour cocktail.
Back to that burger. The Bird is an incredibly popular diner-style place with lots of quirky decor, entertaining menus and of course, impressive cuisine straight from the US. Our burgers were so huge they were basically collapsing, but they were amazing - as were the hand cut fries.
That's a real burger if I ever saw one.
I love that Tempelhof wasn't just closed to people like most abandoned places are and that it could actually be of some use. I loved Berlin for that, I went back in 2006 and there was this amazing place, Tacheles Kunsthaus which was an old department store I think which had been taken over by artists and had small bars and places selling art in it, it was covered in graffiti and was amazing. Sadly I think it's now been closed but it's that Berlin vibe that I found very cool.

That burger looks so yummy and so filling haha. As does that sushi... I like the idea of a picnic in an old airport, it does indeed sound like it would be a nice, quite place. I'll have to try it sometime :]
